Maria was born in Russia, but spent her teen years in China earning a degree in Chinese literature and culture. Having decided that her educational background lacked business know-how, she moved back to Russia and studied marketing and finance, and then went on to be a Tenant Relations Manager in Moscow. Nevertheless China remained an important part of her life.
Married to a diplomat, she returned to Taipei as an expatriate spouse three years ago, bringing a two-year-old son. Since then she’s been in love with the city and has become an active member of the international community. Maria feels that expatriates need to spend quality time in Taipei to really discover the amenities of local life.
'For expatriates,' she says, 'things can get tough at the beginning, especially if you've never been to Asia before. But gradually it settles down and you start to appreciate the lifestyle. Many people are reluctant to leave when their assignment is over.'
Although the mysteries of China are myriad, Maria has a lot of first-hand knowledge and is looking forward to guiding you through your first steps in the lovely city of Taipei.
