Iris grew up in one of the most beautiful cities on earth – Edinburgh, Scotland. But the attractions of the wider world proved too great, and Iris has lived and worked on three continents as an expatriate. Her longest spell was in Belgium, where she lived for ten years. She has also lived in Zambia and South Africa, as well as working ‘in depth’ in France and Germany.
Iris studied English Literature at Maryland University European Division, before working mainly as a creative professional – magazine editor, trade fair organizer, public relations manager. It was while working in Germany that she met her Mexican husband, moving finally to Mexico City, where she has lived for 14 years.
’Mexico City was a real challenge for me,’ she says, ‘definitely not love at first sight! I am at heart a country girl and finding myself in one of the largest, most chaotic cities in the world was very hard. I did not speak any Spanish at first and this prevented me from settling in more quickly. Mexico can be frustrating for people coming from the USA or Northern Europe. Time has a different meaning and the mañana syndrome is alive and well! For all that, Mexico City is a vibrant, exciting, place with a great social life for expatriates. The country is rich in culture with beaches to die for!’
Having developed a detailed understanding of Mexico and how things work, Iris has is the perfect first contact point for people relocating to the world’s largest city.
