Although
Jennifer was briefly an expatriate in college years, when she studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador, she never thought she’d be living in an foreign country one day.
After meeting her Spanish husband in graduate school in Indiana, where she was studying a Masters degree in Linguistics and TESOL, the two married and moved to Madrid.
“I can say that living here very much agrees with me,” she says. “Not only do we have Spanish family and friends here, I have also found wonderful international friends though the expatriate network. There is even a club for American women married to Spaniards!”
Having English-speaking friends is important to Jennifer, but she is by no means removed from the local culture. “I try to stay abreast of all the local festivities and customs. My husband and my son are Spanish and in many ways I feel Spanish too.” Whether feasting on tapas in the evening or taking in a Spanish film at the cinema, Jennifer stays in touch with her inner-Spaniard.
“When people ask me if I am going to return to the United States, I think ‘why would I ever want to leave Madrid? I can walk outside, get in my car or on a bus and be drinking a café con leche in front of the royal palace in less than an hour! And I live in the suburbs!’”
She looks forward to sharing this insider’s knowledge of the city.
