“When I was a kid, I used to read Mom’s National Geographic and be fascinated with the far-off places, like Katmandu, Prague and Zanzibar. I never thought I would end up in one of them,” says
Adelea. She has now found her way and her home in Dresden.
Having traveled all over the world with her family when she was younger, she continued her own adventures in college by spending summers in East Africa and Italy. She always knew she would live overseas when she got older, so when she and her husband were offered the opportunity to move to Dresden, they jumped at it. After pulling out their globe to find the former East German city, they realized that life might be a bit more complicated than they were used to in Texas, but within weeks Adelea quit her job as a fundraiser, packed the house, vaccinated the dog and took off on a new adventure.
“I knew I needed to immerse myself and find my own stride here, or I would be in trouble.” She immediately started German lessons, participated in the International Ladies Group, took art lessons and taught part-time at the International School. She still focuses on one of her first loves, fundraising, by consulting with non-profit agencies in Dresden.
“Dresden is a great community. There may be a physical language barrier, but the language of the heart speaks loud here in our beautiful little town.”
